Plastic was made to make our lives less complicated and easier. People nowadays use it so much that they now fully depend on it. What most people don’t know is that it’s hurting our environment so much it’s killing the animals and wildlife. As we continue to use so much plastic, the life around us dies and it will continue to unless we do something about it.
Our class recently went to an uninhabited island where we picked up as much trash/ plastic as we can find. On our trip to the island we gathered over 96 metal cans, 1,876 plastic water bottles, 317 bottle caps, 568 shoes, etc. The total of all the trash we picked up was only 1.25 percent of the island. There was more trash that was picked up than last year, and the trend seems to show a steady supply of nasty plastics that will continue to wash ashore to our beautiful islands, carried here from other sources. Many of us wonder, What happens next? For the Marine Biology class this means we gather our results and compare it to last year’s results to show everyone how much trash is washed up on our islands. For others that means not littering, reducing the use of plastic and picking up trash. If we continue to learn and spread awareness about plastic pollution, it will enable us to do something about it.
